“You know what you have to do now?” Doris asks.

“Try and get the Monsters back into the books?” I reply tentatively. I’m pretty sure that’s what she means, but who knows with her.

“Yep. Which means…”

We both glance at the door.

“We need to go back to the library,” I say with a sigh.

“Yep again. Wait here.”

She disappears into the kitchen, and I hear the dishwasher being opened. I smile when she returns with some bigger kitchen knives than last time, and I hold my hand out for one. She slaps the handle against my palm, turns to pick up my bag and gives me that as well.

“Just one quick check?”

I nod and open my bag, peering inside. “Nope. No parent book, nor a key. Yet. I’ll get there, Doris. I promise you.”

“Don’t do it for me, girl. You need to do this for you and you alone.”

I give her a grateful smile and then face the front door.

“Wait!” she says and tuts. She goes across to the side table and picks up the pen and pad that I leave there for my shopping lists. “We need a list.”

Raising my eyebrow. “You want food?”

“Noo,” she says as if I’m a bit dim. “A list of books. Which Monster Romance books have you read lately?”

My cheeks heat up. I don’t want to say.

Doris rolls her eyes. “Oh, Kate. I don’t care if you read Monster Romance books. Hell, I read them. I really don’t care if you hide them in crochet magazines or read them on the bus. No one does.”

Still, I hesitate. My embarrassment at being caught reading Monster porn, deepening my blush until I feel like my whole head is going to set on fire. “What makes you think it has anything to do with the books I’ve read?” I croak. “I didn’t read Hell’s Belle.”

“No, but I read it in your house, with you here. I am convinced that you are opening these worlds, Kate, and if that upsets you, I’m sorry but you need to get over it. I’m not blaming you; I’m just trying to help fix this mess. Okay? So, we need a list.”

Gulping, I nod. She’s right. “There aren’t that many. I don’t usually bring them home and only read them in the library when I get a few minutes. It takes me ages to finish one.”

She nods. “Okay, then we definitely need to head to the library. You ready? You can think about the list on the way.”

Relieved that I’ve been let off the book hook for now, I nod back. “Okay.”

We face the door, grim determination on our faces and our knives at the ready when a loud knock makes us both squeal, the fear coursing through me so badly, I nearly vomit. I stumble back, gripping the knife tighter.

“Kate?” A familiar voice calls out and I feel both relieved and scared at the same time.

“Thrace?” I call back.

“Yes, it is me.”

Casting a glance at Doris briefly, I stare back at the door. “How
